TL;DR: — The Insights Management Platform, renamed Launch Intelligence Platform started as a simple content and notification hub was transformed into a data-dense, analytics/business intelligence dashboard meant to showcase AI summaries, comparative graph setup and KPIs. Q2 2024-Present

What did we want to accomplish?

This project evolved through close collaboration with key stakeholders across numerous briefs, meetings, and working sessions. The existing product was in urgent need of a UI overhaul to align with our Group Engagement Application. Leveraging our design system, the page was rebuilt from the ground up, introducing new features such as AI-generated summaries and insights alongside full source transparency, allowing users to fact-check or reference original quotes. The redesign also incorporated KPI indicators and a prominent, eye-catching graph displaying monthly trends.

the findings and testings

Early Iteration

Early designs had a familiar design, but the layout was wrong for it's intended use. It had the graph at the top, which was nice due to it being larger for the user, but it automatically made the insights a forethought.

Addition of Tables, Search and KPIs

After doing some rearranging and exploration, new features were added in to enhance the product:
  • Areas for KPIs such as verbatim count and sentiment
  • Action buttons for PowerPoint and CSV downloads
  • Table to scroll through the verbatims that were making up this data.
There were a few ideas that never made it to the product as it is now
  • A navigation sidebar
  • Advanced search features [And, Or, Exclude keywords]
  • Suggested search keywords and saved search keywords

Current Iterations and Future ideas

As more users started to interact with the product, a lot of the feedback that was shared were mostly for expansion of features.
  • An enhanced filtering system, which includes a custom date range, author, source, regions
  • More KPIs like a listing of top countries
  • Additional source types, including custom sources
  • Easy navigation to toggle between a standard insights report, a congress version of an insight report, and our Ask Anything feature.

what was discovered and the start of fixing it

Biggest Takeaway

One the the biggest takeaways from this project once new features started to be added and the product grew, was the lack of expandable space. I compared it to a starter home, it was fine while it lasted, but then the lack of space became a problem. There was no more room to shove features in without adding more visual clutter which would then distract the user from the main focus, which was the Insights.

I explored the expansion and redesign of this product in my Deep Dive: Using AI to Design article.

Other Self Critiques

True Responsiveness

The breakpoints of the product forgoes the medium/tablet sizing and it lumped in under the mobile sizing. Our users had a 2% tablet rate, and mobile was only slightly heavier number, so most time and effort went into the desktop sizing.

Better Accessibility

Although the basic WCAG accessibility standards were followed, there were still some areas that I think we could have went farther to really make it accessible friendly. Such as using more alt tags for screen readers.

Expandable Graph

The graph was always a pain point, I thought it too small for the amount of data that was shown in it. Especially as iterations of the graph now have the graph going back decades, it needed a bigger canvas.
